Surfboard feel like it’s been weighing you down? Does that fresh coat of wax you put on before every surf, feel like it adds just weight to your board and not quite the amazing grip you remembered it once had to offer? That’s probably because you’ve been riding your board, with the same old base coat of wax, that has been accumulating on the deck of your board, since the first day you bought your weapon of wave destruction and ran home to etch and scratch on your maiden vessel’s first and ever so poignant, wax coat of beads.
Surfing in Hawaii, wax problems??
I know I just used a lot of commas, and that I just used what would be considered to be the epitome of a run on sentence, but this thought process and action of doing, to Scrape Off Your Wax is very much just that… it’s a run on process! Now when you wait this long before you begin to notice your wax sucks, your tell-tail signs will probably be that your deck of wax is getting to a point where it feels more like a deck of grease, rather then the precious foundation of grip that is so often overlooked. There’s a reason for this and simply put, wax has shelf-life. Eventually, as your wax gets old, it loses it’s stick and starts to flake off. This is when your board begins working against you and not for you. In fact, the laziness of not periodically changing your wax, can cause serious injury. My husband Tamayo blew out his knee by leaving a dirty coat of wax on his board, keeping him out of the water for a solid 2 and a half months. If you have been using your surfboard for more than 3 times a week, for 3 months, then you are due to Scrape Off Your Wax.Coincidently, I recently did the same. Actually, I cleaned my wax because… I’m telling you, it’s hard to consistently come up with new ‘Bloooooogggs’. Otherwise I would have probably come up with another excuse all ready to not have done it. Now that this tedious chore is finally complete… “Awesomeness”.
the process of cleaning wax ball
The best thing is, that once the task is over, that old surfboard you were just feeling under your feet now has a whole new life to it. Your new found connection with and old friend should reinvigorate your surfing passion. My new/old board feels sooo much better, fresher and ready to Rock and Roll. So do your shaper justice by cleaning your deck once in a while. When you Scrape Off Your Wax you just might be able to see your shapers logos once again.
I like to get a good wax comb or old credit card and pour warm water over it.
Tamayo likes to briefly leave it in the sun before scraping.
However you decide to do it, it’s probably best to do it out side and put an old towel or sheet down under the board. It can get kind of messy, so what that does is help collect the scrapings that would normally fall into your yard causing non-biodegradable mess. Wax scrapings are not fun to lawn more over.
wax balls and bards its all part of surfing
1) It’s like getting a new surfboard all over again without paying for a new board.
2) Wax over time looses effectiveness, so a fresh coat gives new life to your old board.
3) It gives you the new grip, so you won’t slip and you can just full on rip !
4) Your board will weigh less.
5) You can see if you have any buckles, dings or pressure dings and you can see if your board is taking on any water.
Once again your board looks aesthetically awesome when you’re doing your big kine’ flashy turns.
If you don’t Scrape Off Your Wax once in awhile, it can be down right dangerous. Injuries and accidents my occur.
