A few years back Tamayo and I got a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to England and Ireland with Independent movie maker and documentarist Robby Seeger. He assembled a small team of adventurers. This consisted of a tight secondary film crew, who’s soul reason for being there was to capture all the lengthy action and candid lifestyle of the European Surfing Community. The other half of the team assembled, was a handful of us knuckle headed surfing professionals from Hawaii. This included me (with a freshly healing broken foot from Skateboarding), my husband Tamayo (who absolutely can’t handle the COLD), and our Mad Dog buddy, Jamie Sterling (who is actually always up for any challenge, but wasn’t scheduled to meet up with us until the Irish part of our journey).

Our mission was to explore the monster waves of Europe.

severn bore england OSE Surfs a European tidal wave

Surfing the freezing COLD river in England, better known as the Severn Bore  would be the start of our Monster Wave attempts. This unique surfing experience can only be summed up as a surfer that rides a real tidal wave. The wave is truly caused by the years most intense and extreme tides that ebb and flow in the atlantic ocean. This happens during Winter and Summer solstice, and Autumnal and Vernal equinox. The wave ridden, is really a single surge of whitewater that gets created through those extreme tidal differences; which also, always occurs yearly during the full moons of those time frames. The surge from the vast and immense Atlantic Ocean gets funneled into the narrow river mouth with such force that it sends a small but powerful tidal wave winding all the way up the river. This surge created wave, is a wave you can actually surf on, and I believe an English man named Steve King holds the Guinness Book of World Records for longest continuous wave ride. Totaling something like a ride of 9.25 miles.

This show captures the spirit of adventure and the chaos of the journey unknown. It’s like a guide to helping you understand what real efforts go into embarking on such a momentous task and the comradery you develop when you partake in riding the Severn Bore. Also, you get a good glimpse into the culture and life style that surrounds the Severn and what surfing has done to add some spice to a place that most would think, is unsurfable.
