There was a lot of hype leading up into this 2015 North Shore winter season. All the surf forecasts were a buzz with, biggest El Nino this, and biggest El Nino that, and blah blah blah!!! With so much interest focused on what’s to be, we at OSE decided to keep everyone informed on the latest and greatest of this all too curious weather phenomenon.
Our 2015 Hawai`i north shore winter season kicked off with a 3 day lasting, NW, winter bender! The waves were ginormous and extremely powerful! The infamous Banzai Pipeline dished out some early Wave of the Winter candidates; while in the meantime, simultaneously down the road, the HIC Pro at
Sunset Beach was crowning Maui’s Ian Walsh for his second HIC Pro victory. It was a well deserved win for Ian, for the sure fact that the waves during the event were as if mortal man challenges nature at her Gnarliest. That’s right, “G”narly with a capital “G”! (See our last blog for more details
in case you missed it.)
Another beautiful sunset on the North Shore of Oahu
Other then that swell of Mass destruction, we’ve been back to our typical old pattern of stiff trade winds and sloppy sand bar wind surf. The one odd yet good feature at the moment, is that it has been relatively warm water in comparison to this time of the season in years past. Great for surfers comfort, but Bad for our precious, living coral reefs. On a slightly different note, The Triple Crown of surfing circus has arrived and their first stop, Haleiwa Town. They are walking on eggshells, hoping for at least 1-2 decent days for their contest waiting period. In reality; at the moment their future looks bleak. Good luck boys.
Weather you like it or not, El Nino is sticking around for a while. So until next post, do what you can to keep that water on your gills, and stay stoked. Always remember, the best surfer is the one having the most fun.
