“It’s horrifying because it’s big and scary and it breaks quadruple (if not 5 times more) in size to the ratio of what the depth of water is. Even though it is sand, the wave breaks in such shallow water that the power is tenfold. You have to be an extremely strong swimmer and even then, using swim fins are practically mandatory. The power and the unpredictable nature of this break can put even the most seasoned veterans in a lot of trouble. So you really have to bring your ‘A- game’ when you paddle out to the Waimea shore pound. This means you have to be fit, on high alert and ready to fight a battle with mother nature.” The classic dual between man vs sea.

Below are 5 tips to check before you even begin to think about going out in challenging surf:

1. When in doubt, don’t go out!

2. Be physically and mentally prepared. Know your own personal limits… You got to be 100%!

3. Make sure you have checked all of your equipment, and know everything is in good working order.

4. Always tell someone where you’re going and let them know how long you are going for. This is in case you never check back in. At least someone can send a search party to try and save you.

5. Be ‘eyes wide open’ alert! Be careful it is really dangerous out there… especially in hawaii.
