Getting Prepared For Surfing
Getting Prepared For Surfing
Surfing may look easy and effortless when you see an experienced surfer ride a wave, but there is much more to it than many people think. In order to really be a great surfer, years of training and learning about the ocean and its various nuances is the reality. However learning to simply catch waves and have fun is not that difficult at all if you have the right instruction! On the north shore of Oahu there are many great instructors, but two of the most qualified instructors are Tamayo and Emilia Perry- a husband and wife team that has spent most of their lives mastering the ocean as professional surfers in some of the most dangerous waves on the planet. Their combined experience, as well as their ability to make sure their surf students have a fun time and are at the same time being safe, make them some of the best at what they do.
After a short time in the water, a beginning surfer can become pretty confident with riding small waves. After a few lessons with Oahu Surfing Experience, most students feel like they have a much better understanding of how to paddle out, line up and sit in the right spot to be able to catch waves on their own. Surfers like to have choices and utilizing a longboard or possibly a softtop board is likely one of the best ways to learn to surf. Not to mention how quickly they will progress with out one to one attention.
For beginners, Tamayo and Emilia usually recommend these types of boards because they make learning much easier than trying to learn on a high performance shortboard or a big wave “gun”.
These boards while great for surfers that know what they are doing are really difficult to try and learn on. Many people see others on these shorter boards and think that is the way to learn, or they want to look cool while walking down to the beach! Some surfboards are unfit to be used as a beginner simply because they do not provide enough stability or flotation for a beginning surfer. One of the reasons a beginner should take a surfing lesson is to make sure they get the right information about the proper board to ride in different conditions. Tamayo and Emilia have the right equipment to make sure that all of their surfing students have the proper board to learn on.
Virtually all beginners will be started off riding the part of the wave that has already broken; in what the surfers call the “whitewash”. This enables the beginning surfer to ride a wave without the need to pop up to their feet in the split second that the wave starts to break. But in just a few lessons, many beginners work their way up to being able to catch waves as they first begin to break.Oahu Surfing Experience always makes sure to conduct their surf lessons in waves that are gentle and won’t be difficult to learn on.
New surfers need to make sure they only try surfing at beaches that are not crowded and dangerous. This way they learn about how to control their board well prior to surfing around lots of other surfers and they slowly learn about surfing etiquette. Once they have perfected these techniques, they will be ready to check out some slightly better waves and they won’t have to worry about getting in the way of experienced surfers. As Tamayo and Emilia always teach their students that its always important to respect the local surfers wherever you go! They teach all of their surf students about safety and about how to surf to their ability.
