Waikiki vs. North Shore for learning how to surf for the first time?I am thinking about a week vacation to take up a series of surfing lessons (totally a beginner).
Do you recommend Waikiki or North Shore?

Beginning on the north shore can be difficult because you don’t know which instructors to choose and whose authentic. However, Waikiki surf schools on the beach are very tourist oriented and they might start you off on a board way too big to learn much on. I suggest you take your lessons on the north shore with an instructor that is certified, and even better, research the instructors and see if they are professional or rather former professional athletes. If you are looking for somewhere to learn to surf, think about going some place with warm water. Its much more tolerable and pleasurable to surf in warm water, let alone try to learn. Surfing is not easy, it takes a lot of time to get the hang of it. Make it easier on yourself by going some place warm with good waves.Once you catch one great wave, you will be hooked! Focus on that….The north shore of oahu is the mecca of surfing and it is a great place to start if you can get there . On the north shore, you can get safe and private surf instruction from real pro-surfers… Have fun.
