Surf checks are an every day routine for the normal surfer and this includes the everyday, working-class Joe. It’s funny, because even if you have to work, or even if you are injured, you will still do everything in your power to at least check the waves once in the day, in quest to convince yourself that you are not missing anything. Besides, wether you are or aren’t gonna surf, we all want to be in the know, so we don’t waste time “burning day light” I like to call it.

Generally when the waves are good every where, surfers tend to have, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” syndrome. You will start with spot A)… then you wonder how spot B) is breaking… then you think long and hard of all the possibilities of spot C) and how its just gotta be better than spot B)… but heaven forbid, if you don’t check spot D); it might have been the the day you have been waiting for it to break all year and you will have to live in ridicule because everyone else scored it. Without fail, you end up checking all the breaks in your local area from one end of town to the other… Ironically, 2 hours later and without fail, guess where you end up surfing? Ding-ding-ding! You guessed it! Spot A)………….
This cultish ritual or habitual pattern is common place for the surfing inhabitants of Margaret River, West Australia and here where we live on the “ seven mile miracle ” of O`ahu, better known as the north shore.
The Golden Rules of Surf Checks:
– If the waves look half-way descent at the first spot you stop and especially if nobody is out; then get your arse out there all ready.
– Don’t take more than an hour doing your surf check.
– Be selective on who you surf with. People can slow you down and in return make you miss the primo surfing moment.
[Mental Note] ~ You want to surf with your friends, but not the ones that drop in on you, or talk too much about their session and post it on facebook . The reasoning here is, the partner you choose to surf with today, could be the very reason there is a 50 pack out in the line-up tomorrow, and after scoring it with only five guys out the first day.
