Pipeline masters doing what surfers does best.
The Pipeline Masters 2014
There was a world title to be battled for and a new champ to be crowned. Heavy wipeouts and history were shaped. Gabriel Medina became the first Brazilian ever to win the elusive and highly sought after surfing World Title. You could hear Brazilian chants and latin drum beats going on all day long and I think there was at least a million photos taken. The final was an extremely competitive one and it was more as if the weight of two nations was battling for the glory rather than two individualized human beings. Gabriel gets a 10 point ride in the heat at Backdoor and the beach goes wild. Chants and hollering erupt from the Mendia corner. The Brazilian supporters were now beginning to think that Gabriel was going to walk away with a clean sweep. Then there’s seconds to go and Julian wilson and Gabriel Mendia get a set each and both catch amazingly beautiful rides.
All the Gabriel fans thought he was guaranteed going to win. About a five minute delay goes by and the crowd goes silent… and I’m talking an eerie sclience . They then announce the scores and the crowd around Mendia’s Brazilian camp goes wild and starts chanting Ozzie Ozzie Ozzie Oi Oi Oi . By the end of the day they had crowned Gabriel Mendia the World Champion, and the Triple Crown and Pipe Masters honors went to Australia’s Julian Wilson. Here are some pictures from all the days action and if you want to see more pictures surfline has some great coverage on the pipe masters
