The other day I was enjoying a beautiful text book surf session. It was a beautiful, warm and sunny day with barely a puff of breeze blowing. The tranquil conditions created such an all around sense of serenity. My thrill craft, better known as a surfboard, surfed the waves like a razor sharp hot knife slicing through butter… absolutely smooth and exhilarating.

Prior to paddling out, there were two of the most beautiful Hawaiian monk seals sleeping on the beach. They were both so majestic in their own unique ways, with their own unique characters. As I was walking by, keeping my distance, one of the seals lifted its head to sneeze. It was absolutely adorable. It then proceeded to give it self a scratch and creep up the beach a little more.
As I began to paddle out towards the lineup, I came across the cutest green sea turtle with an octopus in it’s mouth. The turtle just floated by so nonchalant, completely oblivious to any thing in the sea or world. All the turtle cared about in that moment of time was how good that octopus was going to taste.

So now I’m done surfing and on my way in I see two barely conspicuous, little, yellow floats bobbing up and down. Not thinking much of anything at that particular moment but how good my session was, I went to go an grab the floats. As I grab the floats, I start pulling up an old nylon style fishing net that was covered in algae and tangled on the bottom of the reef. At first I was thinking that I could untangle the net off the reef, hall it up off the bottom, drape it over my board and paddle all this net in with me.
Well, silly me… Because what I thought at the time was a little bit of net to contest with, turned out to be a massive drift net of death. As I started pulling up more and more of this shredded, shitty ocean death trap, all the weights and floats were sinking my board. Stubbornly, I still vividly thought that I would have success in the removal of such an ocean hazard, and I pulled and pulled… then all of a sudden I felt the snag; wrapped around the reef and cinched tight! All that net wasn’t going any where.
