Surfing fitness tips from OSE

As you maybe can tell by now, the team at OSE eat, sleep and breath the great outdoors. Our obsession with mother nature spans from deserts to jungles, from the mountains to the sea. The Instagram content we’ve been posting will most likely reveal that the ocean is our primary home, as well as our regular place of conduct. As much as we love the ocean, we know with great certainty, that no matter how beautiful and calm the conditions may appear at surface level, you should never underestimate her subtle   power and her abrupt unpredictability.

When you begin to surf at the main stream breaks on the north shore, you learn real fast, that if you want to tackle her on a regular basis, you gotta be in good working order. Especially when it comes to the BIG stuff. Imagine not doing anything physical for 2 weeks other then your daily work load and chores, when all of a sudden a consistent swell rolls into town. What do you think is going to happen? I’ll tell ya what’s gonna happen! You start wishing you had participated in a few more of those extra, physical activities that were presented your way, but you so hastily declined on those opportunities; because you decided that you were just a bit to tired from your day.  These are the type of thoughts that will flash through your head as you’re sucking wind gasping, wondering just how many more duck dives you’ll have to initiate before this ever so abundant set, comes to a gracious end. Often times in these moments, you laugh to yourself, and at yourself in consideration to the ironic predicament you’ve placed yourself into. If even you had done so much as to have taken your lovely conscience up for that walk it had invited you on earlier in the week… With all laughing aside, if you don’t maintain some sort of personal health; you are generally all around weaker and quicker to tire. Therefore, your timing and ability to move out of harms way out in the line-up and in the impact zone slows down considerably. As a repercussion to not low maintenance, but rather, “NO” maintenance on your health and cardio, you can become much more susceptible to injury.

Listed below are just some of the Surfing fitness tips from OSE . These are other fun filled hobbies we like to participate in that keeps our work outs fresh. As well, they keep us in descent enough condition and well invigorated to keep on surfing.

# [ down wind SUPing ]

Stand Up paddle

NOTE : (DANGERS) 2 very important precautions are, and l must warn you!

1) Make sure you have a reliable leash or you could die …… No really! I knew a professional paddler that had gone and done a short distance, down wind paddle and as you do, accidentally fell off his SUP. The winds were potent enough that the gusts took his board rather rapidly and super far out to sea. Forcing the pro-athlete to be a whole extra mile out to see then he really wanted to be. Creating for him the dyer choice: with his $500 paddle in his hand does he (A) swim after the $3,000 board that is going further and further out to sea? or (B) does he start swimming to shore and save his own life?????

of course he chooses option (B)… the crazy thing is, is that he looses both his expensive SUP and his extremely expensive custom paddle.

Thus bringing me back to my point. Always use a leash and always have a… buddy system.

2) the buddy system; is basically telling a loved one that you trust, that you are going for a SUP or surf session. Give them the 1. location of choice 2. when you are paddling out 3. when you estimate you might be back on dry land, and the key to success, effectiveness and politeness is, 4. calling your confidant back and letting them know your out of the ocean safe and sound.

# [We love bodyboarding and bodysurfing shore pounds when the waves are subpar],  Take it easy though! Don’t bust your self up prepping to surf.

Another note: The more time you spend in the ocean, the better water woman or man, you will become.

# [ run – swim – runs on the beach] are really fun

Do it with a group and time your selves and have little pools or bets for the end of each week aiming to reward the person with the most improved times.

# [Go Long Boarding! ] What can I say, other then, it really, really helps your over all surfing and face it…  it’s better than doing nothing. Especially food for thought for all you die hard short boarders.

# [ bike riding : just as far as to check out a couple of you local breaks.] Which is really a low impact workout, and it’s side affects are great structure building for your knees.
