 surf slang

Emilia Perry going down the line

Prior to delving into a surfing lesson, one might find it imperative to gaining a brief understanding of certain surfing terminologies. Simply put, when one gains a brief understanding of certain surf slang, they can understand with more certainty, what instructions are actually been given to them from there “ Jeff Spicoli ” like, stereo typed surf coach. When one understands there coach with absolute clarity… less carnage and much less “wipeouts” exists in the path of the fledgling. Believe it or not, this motion picture type of iconic, surfing, cult hero rings more true then not, especially amongst the youth of the sport.

When you talk to surfers, you always want to understand them but some times you just can’t. Surfer’s have a tendency to keep on meshing, spinning and evolving words. So just when you think you have it figured out, there are more and new words getting twisted and generated. Here are some of the basics. When I hear of new surf vernacular morphing, I will keep you, my readers, updated. If you haven’t already noticed, surf slang when being delivered to the unassuming, can be construed as more down right hilarious rather then being frustrating.

In the game called surfing, we are constantly doing things we don’t want to do… but we find our selves doing them any way and this has a great deal to do with knowing, that mother nature herself, is the playing field.

Things we do in surfing but we don’t like to do, include but aren’t limited to :

Over the falls” – When a surfer falls off the board and the wave sucks him or her up in a circular motion and then the surfer gets cascaded back down, along with the falling lip of the wave. Also referred to as being apart of the “wash cycle”, or being “pitched over” and as well, being “ sucked over “.

“One with the lip” – (this is one of my personal favorites.)

This phrase is used in similar fashion to the one above, but being “one with the lip” is a little more specific and happens when you and the lip of the wave merge and become one. (Not a good place to be)

Donuts” or “Wipe out” – These two words can be used for the basic definition of falling off your board during any part of the ride of your wave, but more appropriately, you would use these terms when someone falls EXTREMELY BAD, or in a back braking, awkward position and in a VERY BAD or rather, critical part of the wave.

“Rag dolled” – When being rolled under the water, or when being stuck in or under the lip, the power of an ocean wave can shake a surfer around in such a way, that it will actually cross through the surfers mind that as he/she is being so violently shaken, the surfer feels as if he/she is being torn apart like a rag doll in the hands of a sadistic child.

     being a  ”  Grom/Grommet  “ : A young surfer

Kook” – What we all are or were in the beginning of our surfing journey and what we all strive not be. A wanna-be surfer of limited skill and does, well, usually does something stupid or dangerous in the surfing line-up.

Paddle around ” – This ruthless maneuver is when you paddle straight out, don’t wait your turn and you “paddle around” around someone who has been waiting and catch a wave right away. This problem and insult is even made worse as this type of callous individual paddles right by the person waiting, says hello, then proceeds to paddle 10 feet past that person who has been waiting patiently and then all of a sudden, without consideration, they are stealing that considerate persons turn. This is both straight up ruthless and rude and can actually lead to a heated argument or even at worst, a fight can break out.

With modern day surfing being several generations old already, you would think we would have come up with some better surf vernacular by now. In the surfing world, the calling out of words like “HO”, “NO” and “GO”  when you are on the wave in the heat of the moment. Have created many moments of miscommunication between surfers and has been the igniter of many surf and turf wars.

I hope this information sheds a little light on the subject of surf slang and I truly hope I haven’t confused you more then you probably already are.
