Questions and Answers

What is the best thing to see/do on the Hawaiian island of Oahu with my family on vacation this summer?I’m looking for things that two adults and two high school age kids would like to do together. We’re also going to Maui. The same question applies for that island.?

One of my favorite place on Oahu is Sandy Beach! It is a huge sandy beach with a killer shore break …great for body surfing, boogie boarding and breaking bones…so be careful if it’s big. Not a place for beginners, its like a double black diamond in the snow skiing world . The thing that’s so fun about it is watching people there!! It’s an absolute scream! That entire coastline is glorious Hanauma Bay for snorkeling…fun for the entire family if there are no waves, don’t miss the toilet bowl, just ask, it’s so fun, it’s a local only secret, tourists don’t usually get to experience it, unless a local tells them about it . It is at Hanauma Bay. Sea Life Park is right there, granted Sea World is bigger, better but NOT more beuatiful! Keep travelling northward on the windward coast and you will find one of the most beautiful (and quickly eroding beaches) in the world: Lanikai (Hawaiian for Beautiful Ocean). Don’t miss the little town of Kailua and Lanikai Beack. Kitesurfing, kayaking to the Mokalua Islands off Kailua Beach Park is a local favroite, very safe if you have a guide and a wonderful day trip. Don’t arrange it through your hotel, do the research yourself: local style! Get a map, or pick up an independent newspaper at Ward Center (in town ) on AlaMoana Blvd. And join a hike…in Kailua/Kaneohe there’s the “stairway to Heaven” guided hike straight up the Pali (hawaiian for cliffs) and you will have been where most Hawaiians have never been before! This hike is accessible through either the Sierra Club (contact them now for info) or the Honolulu Parks and Recreation Dept.the stairway could be maintained through the Coast Guard…Park and Rec should be able to tell you ask for info re: “Haiku Gardens and the Satirway to Heaven”. If you don’t go through the proper channels, people have been known to be arrested.
Visitors think that Honolulu is just another busy city on the beach and that is not true…we have all the beautiful amenities of all the outer islands but with the convenience of a big city close by! It’s a perfect world! Take a trail ride on the beach in Waimanalo, the stable is atthe old Polo Grounds just past Sea Life Park and across from Bellows Beach, where there’s a beach called “Sherwood Forest”. “Sherwoods to locals, you can camp there if you make reservations early! It’s an amazing place-old Hawaiiana. As you travel along this road, you will have dramatic mountains to yor left and breathtaking azure blue Pacific Ocean to your right…it always takes my breath away! If you stay this course, you will eventually end up on the famed North Shore of Oahu: Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and the Banzai Pipeline. The surf breaks are active in winter months…south swell ( Waikiki-side)is alive in summer but doesn’t get big. So take a swim at Waimea Bay and jump of the rock…it’s good fun for the whole family! Good snorkeling there too! Grab some grinds in Haleiwa town…the town that time forgot…make your way to the H3…the prettiest freeway in Hawaii (we only have 3-jeez)..it’s a beautiful drive. And now you have seen half of the island. Go sport fishing at the harbor on Ala Moana! As
when on the north Shore you can become a mermaid with one of our unique mermaid photo shoots or get an amazing surf lesson.
Can you tell me an unusual fact about Hawaii?Facts like: Nicole Kidman and Barack Obama are native born Hawaiians… SPAM is a fave dish… Pineapplies are not the national fruit of Hawaii, etc.
.I am very sorry if my comment is long, I just thought to share facts that are rarely shared about our home. Enjoy!!
Nicole Kidman and Barack Obama are not Native Hawaiians. They may have grown up on our Hawaiian Islands or attended school here. So they would be considered locals or former Kama`aina (local residents).
Hokule`a (ho-coo-lay-uh) is a double-hulled canoe that sailed our very first Polynesian Ancestors to Hawaii. Back in 1976 a replica was built. It took a Micronesian man (South Pacific Island) named Mau to teach the Hawaii Crew members how to sail Ancient Navigation by the stars. He also taught them how to build the Hokule`a just like our Ancestors. Some of our Hawaiian/ Polyneisan Traditions were lost so this is why Mao came to help after he was sought. Mao was the only Polynesian left that had Ancient traditions passed down to him. Fact, on June 9th, 2007 the replica Hokule`a just made History. It sailed off of Hawaii making it’s final desitination voyage to Yokohama, Japan. The crew sailed for (I believe) 5+ months & covered 8,000 miles. They sailed by Ancient Navigation.. The stars. This marked history because the Hokule`a took the place of a voyage that occurred 125 years ago when our Hawaii King David Kalakaua sailed to Japan to meet Japan’s Emperor.
Hawaii is so diversed it’s like a melting pot. You got your Hawaiians, Polynesians, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese…etc. Many local residents (like me) have more than 2 ethnicities in us. I got 4. That’s nothing compared to friends & cousins I know.. They have 8+ ethnicity. Also our diverse local foods in Hawaii is so mouth watering… You need to try it to believe it.
Hula dance was once known as an Hawaiian Religious/sacred dance by our Hawaiian People. It’s still known as. We have 2 types of hula dancing: Ancient (Kahiko) and Modern (Auana). Many local girls/guys back in Hawaii could tell you Hula dancing is a very disciplined dance. It takes dedication and heart to make the dance very graceful & heartfelt. Through our dancing we love to share our home.. Hawaii & our Hawaiian culture.
Many people get very confused with our hula. When you see a fast shaking hip Polynesian dance please note it’s Tahitian and not hula. Also hula dancers don’t wear the coconut bras. Only Tahitian dancers in Hawaii do.
Many of our Hawaiian people & Local residents are rapidly turning homeless. Many of them camp out on beaches across Oahu, Hawaii. It’s so sad & I feel bad. If you spoke to them like I did.. One of the main reasons is because Hawaii is too expensive. It’s the over development, high cost of living that is sadly affecting our people & local residents.
I just learned this known fact… That there are many more Hawaiians living in California than Hawaii.
In Hawaii when we (local girls or Hawaiian girls) wear our Hawaiian flowers behind our left ear it means we are taken (married or in a relationship). When we wear it behind our right ear, it means we are single.
To many Hawaii is known to be paradise, it’s an Island that is over developed, it’s an Island that grows pineapples, or has the famous Waikiki or known as the tourist spot. Honestly coming from my heart Hawaii should also be known for the real Hawaii… It’s lush rain forest, it’s Native species, our Hawaiian culture, our Hawaiian people, The start of diverse cultures coming to work on our Plantations back in the 1800’s. Also the Hawaiian Ancestors that once found Hawaii & took care of this land. Hawaiian Ancestors were known to be very healthy with the foods/crops they grew & ate. The original Hawaiian ancestors invented surfing. Now it’s nation wide popular.
There are so many more untold facts… It’s out there just need to research… Good luck!!
