Hula in Hawaii

Hula in Hawaii is cultural heritage and is a Polynesian dance form. When accompanied by Hawaiian chanting, it is so captivating and beautiful to watch. They call it the language of the heart. Ancient Hawaiian’s used hula and chant to tell stories and to pass down histories and genealogies. Banned by the missionaries until King David Kalākaua revived it in the 1870s, hula evolved with western instrument and musical tastes throughout the 20th century. Today’s hula festivals and competitions usually feature both ‘auana (contemporary) and kahiko (traditional) styles.
