help protect our oceans

Last night I went for an evening run down the beach; soaking up the final light of the day and completely enjoying the golden glow hour. When I reached the end of the beach at Keiki, I was soon stricken with sadness. There was a baby melon-headed whale that beached itself where the rocks and the beach conjoin… right there on the fabled north shore of O`ahu. The thing is, it wasn’t really fable like. It seemed more like a nightmare. The baby whale was shivering from major trauma and dehydration. It was extremely sad because there was nothing anyone could do. Experts believe the juvenile whale was still very dependent on its mother and without her, it would have most likely fallen prey to sharks, or stranded itself again if placed back in the ocean. Reports state, that shortly before dark, the baby whale was taken off the beach and placed in the back of a pickup truck. Dr. Levine administered an injection to put the animal to sleep.

Our beautiful ocean we only have one help protect it

I wish we could have saved such an amazing and adorable little creature. Maybe we can just chalk it up to  survival of the fittest and the ocean arena is nothing more then a fish-eat-fish kind of world. I don’t know what the cause was to create such a scenario, but what I do know is, we must all do what we can to keep our ocean clean. Do your part to help protect our ocean! Simple things… like picking up your trash, paying attention to what sunscreen you use in the water, all the way down to what you are putting down your drain. These are just some of the basic things you can do to help. The one bright and shiny thing that I take away from this gloomy incident is the information I gathered below… So when playing or being active on our shore lines, be vigilant and basically

remember, if you are in Hawai`i and you see someone who has, or you come across a distressed marine animal, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE and call the NOAA hotline at 1-888-256-9840 immediately, and do all you can to help protect our ocean.
