From Jersey To Boston In A Quick Ten Days

Being an intimate and avid Pipeline surfer, I’ll be the first to admit; The sport and art of surfing can down right be, one of the most selfish sport/lifestyles known to mankind. As you advance and get better in surfing, everyone wants The “BEST” wave and everyone wants a lot more of that “BEST” wave. Unfortunately, mother nature often times doesn’t have as much wave resource on tap that a hungry, crowded line-up might appreciate. Other factors of lifestyle selfishness can include, but aren’t limited to the fact that mother nature, good weather and, well, in general, having descent, rideable waves of any sort can lead to extreme flakiness in the nature of the surfing individual. Basically meaning; late to most functions, parties, breakfasts, lunch or dinner engagements and so on and so forth. It’s not that surfers are not committed people. In fact, that’s exactly what they are. It’s just that they are committed to surfing first and for most, and the fact that the ol’ regular calendar scheduled event sometimes just doesn’t coincide with good weather and good waves, a weather phenomena in which the hard core surfer must partake in, at all costs .

From Jersey To Boston In A Quick Ten Days

So now, with all the above mumbo-jumbo being said, two notoriously selfish and engagement flakey surfers are now boarding a plane from Honolulu, Hawai’i, heading towards New York, JFK on a calendar engagement tour event that even the most flakiest of surfers would find it taboo to break this sort of soul binding commitment. The mission we chose to accept, would take us From Jersey To Boston In A Quick Ten Days . This was to try and do something unselfish for a change. My wife and I were volunteering our time and services and heading towards the Eastern Seaboard of the good ol’ U.S. of A, to join the team of coaches at Surfers Healing. Surfers Healing is a nonprofit foundation; dedicated to promoting awareness towards the health benefits that the ocean can provide towards some folks that have a family member who has been diagnosed with autism. Israel and Danielle Paskowitz founded Surfers Healing because of their son, Isaiah. Their son has autism and when he struggled with meltdowns and sensory overload, catching and riding waves with his pops calmed him like nothing else. In now knowing the implications and impact one of these “perfect days” at the beach and in the surf can hold on a descent sized group of people, and in knowing how much joy you can bring to even just a few families looking for just one quick and simple moment to get a proper one of life’s breaths… It’s was now time to leave selfishness behind. However, I would be lying if when that plane was taking off, deep in the back of my head, that internal voice was rehearing over and over; Don’t you think you will be missing perfect early season Pipe while you are gone?

Smiles with Surfers Healing

After a straight ten hour flight, we arrived at JFK airport just in time to be picked up a greeted by our caravan precision. The crew at Surfers Healing had just had an amazing, modern style camper van donated to the foundation… so between the camper van and a donated hire van that resembled some sort of mob vehicle; this would more or less be our road trippin, gypsy caravan From Jersey To Boston In A Quick Ten Days . Being that I had never been to any of the eastern states in my life, and being that I hadn’t been refreshed on any sort of U.S. geography courses since the days of high school, I became completely disoriented after traversing over about three long, water bridges. I was so disoriented, that it was to the point that when we finally showed up to the beach to pre-check out our tomorrow’s venue, that it wasn’t until dinner a couple of hours later that I had realized we were actually in New Jersey and we were not in New York anymore.

After an early night of clocking in and after a much needed, good night of rest; an early, dawn patrol type morning was required of the team. The beaches and the people of Belmar, New Jersey were requesting our company and we darn well couldn’t let them down. As we walked up to our morning beach and wave scenario, the pumping Jersey surf got us so fixated on mother nature at hand, that again, it took us a moment to realize that all the tents were already set up and all the instate and near state volunteers were in action and ready to rock-and-roll. When it really comes down to it, it takes a whole team effort to make that “One Perfect Day” happen.

#rhodeisland #narragansett #beach was the last stop on our #northeast #coast @surfershealing #roadtrip . #oneperfectday is one of this nonprofits mottos and the tour is used to promote the #health #benefit the #ocean can offer to some #families that have #children with #autism . #happy to say, the entire road trip and all the event stops ran safe and smooth! Mahalo to #izzypaskowitz , #jeffekberg and the rest of the boys for allowing us to be apart of such an #awesome #experience . The beaches were loaded with #smiles for miles:) Thanks @fujiokak for the #tomato suit and thanks to all the volunteers that showed up to blow up and helped to make all the #sunshine happen m/

So getting back to the waves. The waves were perfect, with light offshore winds and cranking in the solid 2 to 3 with occasional 3&1/2 foot sets in the macho, Hawaiian Wave Scale. Translated for the mainlander; it was a bowly 4 to 6 feet, with some sets reaching a top-to-bottom 7 feet tall. Earlier, when I said the waves were perfect; perfect in the relative terms meant for the advanced surfer at large. The surfer at the level of actually and possibly seeking after a hollow barrel. Yup… the day would prove to be tricky, and a day that what would also turn out to be a straight dip into the fryer for a couple of east coast tour rookies such as the missy and myself. As they day wound down and with zero casualties on the days horizon, it was an instant reassurance that we were working with a great and talented team of individuals, but more importantly, we were all being protected by an invisible, awesome and loving God that truly kept everyone safe and unscathed through out the days end. We must have processed around 250 plus kids between around 13 to 16 volunteer surf coaches. Day one down, safe and sound! As day one focused on the needs of the autistic, day two was a special venue designated towards the needs of kids with down syndrome. There were less kids for the day then the previous, but the waves were still packing a punch. However, the team was well warmed up from the initial day and needless to say, executed the mission… Everyone; Safe and sound. Once again, a beach with kids and families glowing, with ear to ear smiles for miles. Interesting thought; I’m coming to the conclusion that volunteer work might be a bit addicting? The day wrapped up early and we were driven back to the hotel and given 2 to 3 hours to pack. By the time we packed and showered and everyone brought their luggage down to the vehicles to be loaded, it was now around 3:30pm, we were off to the big city of New York and this could only mean, that our official Belmar, Jersey tour stop was complete and now over. Us surf healing gypsies were now rolling the traveling caravan into the heart of NYC for a Surfers Healing, bar-b-q style fund raiser at a location that turns out to be one of the most scenic style roof tops in all of New York. As the lights go down in the city, I can recall the most magnificent, roof top, sunset, views; then the night style city whirl wind takes its course and the time flys right on by, but only to have a solid day off in the NYC to see a bit of city history and to recharge our batteries.

about to share the surf stoke

After a few days in the city, It was time to get the flock out and start heading for the New York coast for our next two tour stops. Lido Beach one day, followed by Ditch Plains in Montauk on the following day. As I had previously mentioned, this was a road trip From Jersey To Boston In A Quick Ten Days . The juggernaut known as Surfers Healing is not new to this and they are in reality, an extremely efficient strike force that gets in and gets a great job done and then rolls on out. We will delve more into this road trip in a “to be continued fashion”, but until then, think of something that you might be good at volunteering for and catch the addiction…
