 Benefits of  bodysurfing

Bodysurfing believe it or not, is a great way to train for the surfboard style of surfing.

It puts you in closer connection with the ocean then surfing does, for the sure fact that you’re fully immersed in the moving water. As well, when you body surf, you skim on the wave at surface level, so it actually helps you to learn the dynamics of waves a lot quicker. The other benefits of bodysurfing waves, are that when the waves are not so good or if it’s a board breaking, dumpy beach break, or even if you are not the most confident water person… you can save breaking that expensive board and in the process keep yourself motivated to stay in the water and in doing so learn and develop a more intimate relationship with the ocean. If you want to learn to surf better, wave knowledge is key. So if you are just starting out and are baffled on how waves break, this is one way to learn by getting involved. It is an amazing cross training, but most importantly, it will help immensely with your surfing.

NOTE: like all physical sports, the art of bodysurfing can come with extreme dangers associated with the activity.

– Start small, then work your way up.

learn to fall correctly, because death and paralysis and dislocations can occur from the wrong type of falling in the shore break.

In the learning phase of bodysurfing, try not to partake in reef type waves. It can hurt a lot more when you wipe-out.

learn to read rip currents before beginning.

Ask a life guard about the severity or intensity of a certain break. If there is no life guard, then ask someone who might appear to be a local at the spot. If you don’t trust the persons outtake on the waves and you are unsure; When in doubt? Don’t go out!
