 why we love mermaids

There are so many reasons why we love mermaids . If you haven’t already noticed; when we are not surfing, the team here at Oahu Surfing Experience are dedicated to capturing and documenting surreal images of beautiful mermaids in their natural element.

Mermaid in her element

Off the top of our head, below are just a few reasons we conjured up on why we love mermaids so much…..

[10] reasons why we love mermaids :

1) You have the option of sleeping in the water or on the land.

2) You have the ability to travel to and surf any wave in the world (except maybe South Africa and certain parts of Australia, because they have shark nets… but never fear, mermaids are crafty creatures and can cut through just about any net.)

3) Mermaid hair always looks amazing in and out of the water, and no human based hair product can ever help you to achieve that look. We think it’s all that kelp.

4) They sing to and with each other in perfect melodious harmony.

5) They are a major symbol of empowerment towards women and this is because mermaids are strong, independent, confident and beyond anything, shine with inner beauty.

6) Mermaids love ever body and every thing, and in the grander scheme of things, love living life.

7) Mermaids are peaceful beings or at least until you piss them off… then they turn into Sirens. Don’t sirens and alarm bells go hand in hand? If that paints a better word picture for you? (i.e. the pirates did a good job of angering the peaceful mermaids at mermaid cove, in Pirate’s of the Caribbean 4, On Stranger Tides.)

8) These mythical creatures of the sea have been known to save ship wrecked sailors and other drowning ocean goers.

9) If you ever have the blessings of seeing one, the color of their tails shine with such radiance that it’s absolutely hypnotic.

10) Mermaids represent exploration and adventure. In other words, true living.

Here’s what ol’ wikipedia has to say about our mermaid friends:0

“A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. [1] Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia. The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria , in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same tradition), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans.

Mermaids are associated with the mythological Greek sirens as well as with sirenia , a biological order comprising dugongs and manatees. Some of the historical sightings by sailors may have been misunderstood encounters with these aquatic mammals. Christopher Columbus reported seeing mermaids while exploring the Caribbean, and supposed sightings have been reported in the 20th and 21st centuries in Canada, Israel, and Zimbabwe.

Mermaids have been a popular subject of art and literature in recent centuries, such as in Hans Christian Andersen ‘s well-known fairy tale “ The Little Mermaid ” (1836). They have subsequently been depicted in operas, paintings, books, films and comics.”
